Makaton Signs of the week at Lady Zia Wernher School Facebook Page
Makaton is a unique communication system that combines signs, symbols, and speech to support communication.
At Lady Zia Wernher School, we use Makaton throughout the school day.
We support our school staff and pupils to learn Makaton through training, the signs of the week, sharing topic themed signs and other less familiar signs during specialist events e.g. enrichment weeks.
Key points about Makaton:
Signs are based on British Sign Language (BSL), but Makaton is not the same as BSL—it supports spoken language rather than replacing it.
Symbols are simple drawings that represent words or concepts, helping with understanding and memory.
Speech is always used alongside signs and symbols to encourage verbal communication.
Makaton can be used in everyday life—at home, school, or work—to support understanding and expression
