Activity Boards

Communication activity boards (Paperbased AAC) can be used to communicate about a specific activity, event, story etc.

The symbols, pictures, words, or letters are used to represent common needs, feelings, or topics, allowing users to point, touch, or look at images to communicate.

At school they can be accessed in the classroom, specialist rooms and outdoors, (please see examples).

Activity boards can also be very supportive for individuals therapy sessions, visits to hospitals etc, or at home.  Please speak to the communication team or your class teacher for further guidance on these communication resources.

Common types include:

  • Core vocabulary boards: Contain frequently used words like “want,” “go,” “more,” or “help.”
  • Topic-specific boards: Focus on particular activities, such as “mealtime,” “playtime,” or “school.”
  • Alphabet boards: Allow users to spell out words or names.
  • Emotion boards: Use faces or icons to help express feelings.

They can be printed, laminated, or digital (on tablets or communication devices), and are often customized to match the user’s age, interests, and communication level.
