Communication
The total communication approach at Lady Zia Wernher School supports pupils with diverse communication needs by incorporating a variety of methods and tools to facilitate effective interaction.
This approach recognizes that communication is not one-size-fits-all and embraces different modalities, including speech, Makaton sign language, gestures, using symbols, and the use of assistive technology.
By integrating these various methods, the school aims to provide an inclusive environment where each student can express themselves and engage with others meaningfully.
Our approach is tailored to individual needs, empowering pupils to develop their communication skills in a way that best suits them, ensuring they can participate fully in their education and social interactions.

Communication & Interaction
Universal Support — for every child in our school
- Every classroom at Lady Zia Wernher is designed to support communication. All staff use a range of tools and strategies every day, including Makaton signing, visual symbols, choice boards, and structured attention activities. These approaches are integrated into the school day so that every child — whatever their communication style — feels included and understood.
Targeted Support — a little extra help when it's needed
- Some children benefit from more focused support, often following recommendations from a Speech and Language Therapist. Where this is the case, your child will have specific communication targets in place, and their progress will be regularly reviewed by their class teacher. You will always be kept informed about your child's targets, their progress and how you can support them at home.
Specialist Support — intensive, personalised programmes
- For children with more complex communication needs, we work closely with specialist professionals to create a personalised programme. This may involve regular sessions with a Speech and Language Therapist, additional staffing, and carefully tailored timetabling to give your child the right environment to make progress. Staff receive specific training to ensure they can provide the best possible support.
